Case Study — BESS Monitoring Intelligence Tool — Central European Operator

A privately held renewable energy operator managing a 5-site BESS fleet across Germany approached ASTA with a recurring operational problem: their asset management team was spending significant time each week manually triaging alarms and digging through their existing monitoring platform to locate the root cause of performance issues. By the time a fault was identified, diagnosed, and escalated, critical response time had already been lost.

Fleet profile: 5 sites, 240MWh total installed capacity, Germany Asset type: Grid-scale lithium-ion BESS, containerised Existing tooling: Third-party monitoring platform (data and APM layer) Engagement type: Custom build — dashboard, fault detection, degradation tracking, automated reporting

The Challenge

Asset Managers has to spend hours to find, where is the problem. And dealing with cognitive overload with existing tools.

The operator’s asset managers were working with a monitoring platform that did its job well at the data layer — ingesting telemetry, logging alarms, tracking availability. But the platform stopped there. Every time an alert fired, the team had to manually cross-reference BMS data, SCADA logs, and historical trends to determine what was actually wrong and what to do about it.

On average, root cause analysis per incident was taking 35–50 minutes per event. Across a 5-site fleet generating multiple alerts per week, this was consuming a significant portion of the O&M team’s productive hours — hours that should have been spent on decision-making, not data archaeology.

Three specific problems were costing the operator measurably:

First, fault diagnosis was slow. Alarms fired, but the system couldn’t tell the team what the alarm meant, why it was happening, or what action to take. That translation work fell entirely on the asset managers.

Second, degradation visibility was limited. The operator had no clear view of how their fleet’s actual degradation curve was tracking against the original projections. Without this, they couldn’t assess their warranty position accurately or make informed dispatch decisions.

Third, reporting for investors and lenders was manual. Monthly and quarterly performance reports were being assembled by hand from raw exports a process taking 2–3 days per reporting cycle and introducing inconsistency across sites.

WHAT ASTA BUILT

Full Intelligence Platform that asset managers need only 5 seconds to find issues which saves them Millions of dollars

ASTA designed and delivered a purpose-built operational intelligence platform integrated with the operator’s existing data infrastructure. The build took 11 weeks from kickoff to live deployment.

Fault Detection and Instant Diagnosis The centrepiece of the system is a fault intelligence layer that surfaces a diagnostic popup the moment an asset manager logs in. The popup shows: the active fault, the most likely root cause based on cross-referenced BMS and environmental data, the recommended corrective action, and the estimated revenue or availability impact if left unresolved. No manual cross-referencing required.

The system currently monitors for 40+ fault signatures including cell imbalance, HVAC anomalies, thermal drift, communication failures, and State of Charge deviations.

Degradation Tracking and Warranty Engine ASTA built a degradation intelligence module that plots projected vs actual capacity fade across all 5 sites. The system uses AI to flag deviations from the expected degradation curve and surfaces the likely contributing factors — duty cycle, temperature exposure, depth of discharge patterns.

When degradation behaviour breaches warranty-relevant thresholds, the system automatically generates a claim-ready document containing timestamped performance data, deviation plots, and a plain-language narrative summary — ready to send to the OEM without additional preparation.

Automated Reporting The platform generates daily operational digests for the O&M team and monthly performance reports formatted for management, investors, and lenders. Reports include availability, round-trip efficiency, revenue performance, LCOS trending, and degradation status across the portfolio. Generation is fully automated — no manual assembly.

Portfolio and Site Dashboards A clean multi-tenant dashboard gives the operator a portfolio-level view with drill-down to site and asset level. All five sites are visible in a single pane with live status, active alerts prioritised by severity and financial impact, and trend data accessible without switching platforms.

WHAT THE ASSET MANAGEMENT TEAM SAID

Before this system, every alarm meant 30–40 minutes of investigation before we even knew if it was serious. Now we log in and the answer is already there. The degradation tracking alone has been worth the investment, we had no idea two of our sites were tracking outside warranty parameters.

Project Breakdown

UX with zero friction

  • Root cause analysis time: Reduced from an average of 40 minutes per incident to under 4 minutes. Asset managers now arrive at the corrective action directly from the login screen.

Reporting hours saved: Monthly investor and lender reporting dropped from approximately 2.5 days of manual effort to fully automated generation. The O&M team reclaimed an estimated 25–30 hours per month.

Warranty claims identified: Within the first 90 days of deployment, the degradation engine flagged anomalous capacity fade at two sites that was consistent with warranty breach conditions. The operator initiated OEM conversations with auto-generated claim documentation. Estimated recovery value: €180,000.

Fault response time: Average time from alarm to corrective action reduced by 73% across the fleet.

Degradation visibility: The operator now has a live projected vs actual degradation view across all 5 sites for the first time, with AI-generated alerts when any site deviates beyond a defined threshold.
